Ensuring Your Newborn Gets the Sleep He Needs

Most people know that newborns need a lot of sleep, but just how much? And, aside from how much sleep, how do we ensure that they get all the sleep that they need? How do we as parents make sure that our children get the sleep they need to grow and develop into a healthy, happy child?Before we can delve into the wide world of newborn sleep needs, it is important to understand that a baby's sleep needs vary based on how old they are. A 1 month old child will need more sleep than a 3 month old child. It is also important to understand that a baby needs sleep both during the day, and during the night. These hours may be inconsistent, but there are ways to encourage sleep, and elicit the right amounts of sleep from your baby.How Much Sleep Does a Newborn Need?At one month or less, a newborn baby needs at least sixteen hours of sleep a day. Of course, all babies are different, and some will sleep more, and some may sleep less. If your baby is sleeping significantly less, this can be detrimental to their health. More than sixteen hours of sleep is OK, and can actually be good for your child's growth and development. However, remember that a baby that is lethargic and difficult to wake needs to see a medical professional as soon as possible. This is especially true if the baby is unresponsive to being woken for a feeding.A baby one month old or less will need at least 8 hours of sleep during the night. Baby will wake to eat during the night, but typically goes right back to sleep after. The remaining 8 hours will be divided up during the day, and will be interrupted by brief waking periods. Newborn naps range from 2 to 4 hours at a time, with 2 hours being the most common.At 3 months old, a baby need a total of about 15 hours of sleep each day. With all the hustle and bustle of raising a child, with laundry, dishes, social calls, etc, it can sometimes be difficult to keep track of everything. If you keep a sleep log you can track how many hours baby is sleeping, and when this sleep is occurring. If you notice baby not getting enough sleep, take action to ensure that they are getting enough naps to equal the recommended sleep allotment for their age group. If too many hours are passing between naps, work on lulling baby to sleep by reducing activity and stimuli.
